Houston Texans linebacker E.J. Speed injured a quad during spring team workouts and had surgery last week. Coach DeMeco Ryans said Speed is out indefinitely and gave no definite return date. "We'll see how that recovery process goes," he said.

Speed signed a two-year deal worth up to $13 million with the Texans in the offseason. The contract carries a $10 million base and up to $3 million in incentives. He joined the Texans last offseason on a one-year, $5 million deal after six seasons with another team.

Speed played in 16 games last season and recorded 62 tackles with three tackles for loss. He had been the third linebacker alongside two others on the roster. To fill the spot, the team will open competition among Jake Hansen, Jamal Hill, Marte Mapu and two 2026 rookie draft picks.
