Texas Edges Texas Tech 4-1 to Claim Back-to-Back WCWS Titles

ESPNTexas defeated Texas Tech 4-1 in the Women's College World Series championship game on Thursday night in Oklahoma City to win its second consecutive national title. Texas trailed 1-0 after four innings. Texas Tech scored first on an RBI single by Lauren Allred in the third inning.
NiJaree Canady pitched a complete game for Texas Tech, allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits with three walks. Her season record finished at 29-7, and the appearance marked her final collegiate game. Texas scored twice in the fifth inning.
Kaiah Altmeyer and Ashton Maloney led off with singles. Logan Halleman made a leaping catch in left field with one out. NiJaree Canady walked Katie Stewart to load the bases, then shortstop Hailey Toney committed a bases-loaded throwing error that allowed two unearned runs to score and gave Texas a 2-1 lead.
Freshman Hannah Davis recorded the final two outs of the inning for Texas. Kayden Henry homered off Canady to open the seventh inning. Leighann Goode singled later in the inning to drive in the final run.
Canady retired 11 consecutive batters after allowing a single to Kayden Henry in the first inning and robbed Kaiah Altmeyer of an extra-base hit with a runner on first in the sixth. Teagan Kavan struck out five batters over the final two innings to earn the save. She recorded her fifth save of the season by striking out Mihyi Davis for the final out.
Kavan became the first pitcher with two shutouts and two saves in one Women's College World Series and was named most outstanding player. Citlaly Gutierrez started for Texas and pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits. Her season record stands at 11-3.
Coach Mike White led Texas to the school's second national title in his eighth season. Texas Tech lost the series opener to Texas 7-3 on Wednesday. Second-year coach Gerry Glasco has led Texas Tech to its only two WCWS appearances.
Texas won six straight games in Oklahoma City after opening the tournament with a loss.
