The November ballot in Texas is now set after Republican Sen. John Cornyn lost to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in Tuesday's primary runoffs. Cornyn, who had held the seat for 24 years, lost by a 27-percentage-point margin. President Trump endorsed Paxton one week before the runoff.
Democrats need a net gain of four seats to retake the Senate majority.
Paxton was first elected Texas attorney general in 2014. Securities fraud charges filed against him in 2015 were dropped in 2024 under a pre-trial diversion agreement. He was impeached by the Texas House in 2023 on bribery and dereliction charges but was acquitted by the state Senate. " Paxton has labeled Talarico "James Tala-freak-o" and highlighted past remarks by the Democrat.
