Ken Paxton said restrictions on in vitro fertilization should be examined to avoid loss of fertilized eggs. The Republican nominee spoke at a conference in Washington, D.C., and declined to commit to national protections legislation.
Washington ExaminerTexas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Texas, said restrictions on in vitro fertilization should be considered to prevent the loss of fertilized eggs. Washington Examiner reported that Paxton made the comments Saturday during an interview at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to Majority Conference in Washington, D.C.
“We need to have restrictions, so that we don’t lose fertilized eggs, if that’s possible, and we need to just examine the issue,” he said. Paxton declined to commit to supporting a hypothetical bill that would establish national protections for IVF.
“It’s easy to say I’d support a vote, but I would need to read the bill, find out exactly what it does, find out what protections are in there,” he said.
His campaign told the Texas Tribune earlier this month that he would cosponsor a pro-IVF bill from Sens. Katie Britt of Alabama and Ted Cruz of Texas if elected. President Donald Trump endorsed Paxton before his May primary election against Sen.
John Cornyn and has stated that Britt first raised IVF with him after a 2024 Alabama Supreme Court ruling that questioned the procedure’s legality. Approximately 100,000 babies are born each year in the United States through IVF, and a 2024 poll from Navigator Research found that a third of Republicans know someone who has used the procedure to produce a pregnancy.
