Texas Teen Found Guilty of First-Degree Murder, Sentenced to 35 Years After Self-Defense Claim Rejected

Karmelo Anthony was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. Collin County court records show the conviction and sentence followed a trial in which jurors rejected Anthony’s self-defense claim.

Body-camera footage released by Collin County on Friday captured Anthony’s arrest at the scene.

As an officer radioed that he had the “alleged suspect” in custody, Anthony responded, “I’m not alleged. ” The same footage records Anthony adding, “He put his hands on me. I told him not to. He put his hands on me,” while crying.

Prosecutors said Anthony used a folding knife to stab Metcalf, 17, during a confrontation that began after Metcalf asked Anthony to leave a tent reserved for Memorial High School athletes. The stabbing occurred during a rain delay at the track meet. Prosecutors identified the weapon as a $13 Walmart knife.

Surveillance video from a distant security camera shows athletes gathered around the Memorial High School team tent. The actual stabbing is not clearly visible because of the camera’s distance and grainy quality. The footage instead shows a brief back-and-forth movement beneath the tent before Anthony emerges and runs from the area.

Collin County also released graphic photographs admitted as evidence, including images of Metcalf’s fatal chest wound, a blood-soaked coach’s jacket, and the folding knife. The exhibits were made public after Anthony’s conviction.
