Thefts of building materials reported at Palisades construction sites
Los Angeles police notified residents last week of increased thefts of construction supplies and copper wire from rebuilding sites. At least eight incidents occurred this month, according to an internal LAPD email.
New York PostLos Angeles police notified Palisades residents last week of a recent increase in thefts targeting construction materials and copper wiring at rebuilding sites. A senior lead officer sent an email to residents stating that at least eight such crimes had occurred this month.
The message urged residents to install solar lights and cameras and to secure tools and materials. The officer wrote that reduced street lighting in the area provides cover for thefts in the evenings. Police said they are deploying available resources to deter further incidents.
Resident accounts One resident reported that dozens of plywood sheets were taken from a vacant lot in April shortly after delivery. The resident said the theft required equipment to cut a fence chain and stated that private security had been hired. A second resident said repeated thefts had prompted neighbors to compile crime reports in a spreadsheet.
The resident cited Proposition 36 and said law enforcement appeared limited in its response. A local builder said some thefts might stem from disputes over subcontractor pay, with workers possibly taking materials as additional compensation. Many residents are rebuilding homes damaged in last year’s fires.
