Three people were charged with misdemeanor destruction of property after officers said they saw them peeling and removing sections of blue coating from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on June 20. Sophie Dennison-Gibby, 49, Justin Carreno, 47, and Cameron Thiers, 26, were detained between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
That day, Newsweek reported. Each is charged with alleged damage valued at less than $1,000. If convicted, they face a maximum penalty of 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. The charges are separate from a felony case against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who has been accused of causing more extensive damage and has denied the allegations.
The National Park Service completed a multimillion-dollar restoration of the pool earlier this year after President Donald Trump publicly criticized its condition. Algae has reappeared since the work, and the site has been the focus of repeated alleged vandalism incidents.
