Hinch said the team has treated every contest as decisive since May. "We've been playing Game 7 since May," Hinch said before the game. He added that the Tigers must ignore trade speculation and focus on winning to keep All-Star pitcher Tarik Skubal, who is eligible for free agency after the season.
Skubal has recorded a 2.97 ERA across seven starts since returning from a six-week elbow injury that overlapped with Detroit's May slump. FanGraphs assessed the Tigers' chance of winning the AL Central at 16 percent entering Monday, a figure higher than their projected wild-card odds. The team has also played the fewest intradivision games among AL Central clubs, which could aid a late surge.
Veteran infielder Gleyber Torres was activated from the injured list on Monday. Infielder/outfielder Javier Baez is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Class-A Lakeland on Tuesday. Hinch said he will limit Torres's playing time over the next 10 days to manage his return.
