Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid said TikTok removed 4.1 million accounts and YouTube removed 600,000 accounts of children under 16. The action follows a March 2026 regulation on high-risk platforms.
RapplerTikTok and YouTube deactivated a combined 4.7 million accounts belonging to children under the age of 16 in Indonesia, Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid said late on Thursday. TikTok, developed by Chinese technology company ByteDance, deactivated 4.1 million accounts. Alphabet’s Google video platform YouTube deactivated 600,000 accounts.
Hafid stated the ministry wants other platforms to follow the same steps. Neither TikTok nor YouTube responded immediately to requests for comment. In March 2026 Indonesia issued a regulation requiring social media companies with platforms deemed high risk to deactivate accounts of children under 16.
Platforms covered so far include X, Meta’s Instagram, and Roblox. Hafid said the ministry is currently checking self-assessment reports submitted by the companies. “We’re not just delaying a child’s access, but we want behaviors from platforms to change, too,” she said on Thursday.
