The Toronto Maple Leafs fired assistant general manager Hayley Wickenheiser on Thursday as part of a front office restructuring led by new general manager John Chayka. Wickenheiser had joined the organization in its player development department in 2018 and served as assistant general manager since 2022.
She confirmed the departure in a social media post, writing that after several discussions with Chayka about her role, it became clear his leadership group envisioned a different path.
Chayka also dismissed assistant general manager Darryl Metcalf and head of amateur scouting Mark Leach, who guided the selection of Gavin McKenna with the first pick in the most recent NHL draft. Nearly a dozen employees were removed in total. Chayka said in a statement that the moves were part of an ongoing evaluation of the organization and that the decisions were not a reflection of the commitment of those affected.
He added that the team was grateful for their contributions and wished them the best. Wickenheiser wrote that it had been an incredible honor to work for the Toronto Maple Leafs over the past eight seasons.
