Trump Accepts Invitation to Attend NBA Finals Game at Madison Square Garden
President Donald Trump said he will attend an NBA Finals game next week after receiving an invitation from Knicks owner James Dolan. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed Trump would be welcome and noted the visit would mark the first by a sitting president at an NBA Finals game during his tenure.
ESPNPresident Donald Trump said Thursday he has accepted an invitation to attend an NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden next week. "The answer is yes," Trump said. " The Knicks hold a 1-0 series lead over the San Antonio Spurs before Game 2 on Friday in San Antonio.
New York's 14-point victory in Game 1 on Wednesday marked its 12th consecutive win of the postseason. The Knicks are playing in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. "They're really great, a great team," Trump said.
He added that he watched Game 1 and praised Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama. "[Wembanyama] is a great player," Trump said.
"President Trump is very much a New Yorker," Silver said. Silver noted that Trump's appearance will be the first by a sitting president at an NBA Finals game during his tenure, which began in 2014. Silver described Trump as a longtime Knicks fan who attended multiple NBA drafts at Madison Square Garden and once appeared in an "I love this game" commercial.
"Sports, in particular, is something where we can emphasize what we have in common, not what pulls us apart," Silver said. The NBA will add security layers for Trump's attendance. "There should be extra security for the president of the United States to be at a game, but I think the fans are very understanding of that," Silver said.
Trump is expected to sit in a luxury box.
