Trump Accounts Offer $1,000 Government Deposit for U.S. Children Born 2025-2028
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act created tax-advantaged accounts for families with children born between 2025 and 2028. The accounts include a $1,000 federal deposit and allow annual contributions up to $5,000. An official app launched on May 28, 2026.
The accounts provide a $1,000 government deposit upon opening. Families may contribute up to $5,000 annually with after-tax dollars, and employers may contribute up to $2,500 per child each year. The official Trump Accounts app became available on all major platforms on the morning of May 28, 2026. Initial $1,000 deposits are scheduled to begin in July.
Contributions are not tax-deductible.
Withdrawals before age 18 are prohibited. After age 18, the accounts function like traditional IRAs, with withdrawals subject to ordinary income tax and a potential 10% early withdrawal penalty unless used for qualified education expenses or a first-time home purchase.
Financial planner Eric Roberge stated that 529 plans offer higher contribution limits, more diversified investment options, potential state tax deductions, and the ability under the SECURE Act 2.0 to convert portions into Roth IRAs. Taxable investment accounts allow globally diversified portfolios with no contribution limits, unlike Trump Accounts, which restrict investments to U.S. stock index mutual funds or ETFs.
Roberge noted that the Treasury will initially administer the accounts rather than established custodians such as Fidelity or Schwab, which may result in operational issues for early users. Roberge said his family maintains a 529 plan and a taxable investment account for their daughter and would not open a Trump Account even if she had been born in the eligible period.
