Trump Administration Seeks $25 Billion for Golden Dome Missile Defense Plan
The Trump administration is requesting $25 billion for initial capabilities of a layered missile defense system. Democrats and arms-control groups have criticized the proposal.
thehindu.comThe Trump administration is seeking $25 billion through the reconciliation package for early capabilities of a proposed missile defense system called Golden Dome. The system is designed to protect the United States from ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missile threats.
The Pentagon has described it as a layered system of systems that would combine space-based sensors, space-based interceptors and existing ground, sea and air defenses.
Markey stated Tuesday that the proposal is a gold-plated boondoggle. He said it would enrich defense contractors and push Russia and China to expand their arsenals. The criticism coincided with a report from Physicians for Social Responsibility, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and Back from the Brink.
The groups argue the shield could become a trillion-dollar catalyst for a new nuclear arms race. Defense contractors stand to gain multiyear revenue opportunities if the plan moves forward.
