President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States would impose 100 percent tariffs on goods from any country that taxes digital services provided by American companies. The statement, posted on Truth Social, specified that the tariffs would apply immediately and override existing trade agreements.
Trump noted that numerous European countries have discussed or are close to enacting such taxes.
-European Union tariff deal that caps most EU exports at 15 percent, though digital services taxes were not included in that agreement. Britain has had a 2 percent digital services tax since 2020 on revenues from search engines, social media platforms, and online marketplaces when global digital revenues exceed £500 million and more than £25 million comes from U.K. users.
The tax raised more than £800 million in 2024–25, up from £678 million the previous year. Trump made a similar threat regarding the U.K. digital services tax in April.
