In his message, Trump wrote: 'To the Iranian leaders, who will soon be in negotiations with my representatives: I would greatly appreciate the release of these women. I am sure that they will respect the fact that you did so.
Please do them no harm! ' He re-posted the message from Eyal Yakoby, which included images of the eight women. Two of the women, Golnaz Naraghi, 37, and Venus Hosseininejad, 28, had been released on bail since late March, according to the Iran Human Rights organization in Oslo.
Iran's judiciary stated that some of the women had already been released and none faced execution. Rights groups reported that at least two of the other six women still in detention are facing charges that carry the death penalty. com reported.
Naraghi, an emergency room doctor and internal medicine specialist, and Hosseininejad, who practices the Baha’i faith, were arrested amid the January anti-regime protests in Iran. Hosseininejad was taken into custody on January 15 and forced to confess to crimes against the state on public TV, her family told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Naraghi was taken into custody on January 14 and forced to sign a confession at the Qarchak women’s prison, according to the Femena human rights group.
Both women were part of the broader demonstrations that led to widespread arrests. Among the other detainees is Bita Hemmati, accused of using explosives and weapons, throwing objects such as concrete blocks, participating in protest gatherings, and disrupting national security, according to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).
Hemmati was arrested alongside her husband and two other men who lived in their apartment building.
Hemmati, her husband, and the two other men were sentenced to death for their alleged crimes against the regime. The NCRI provided details on these charges, which carry the potential for capital punishment. Diana Taherabadi, 16, and Mahboubeh Shabani, 33, were arrested earlier this year.
Taherabadi was charged with waging war against God, while Shabani was accused of assisting wounded protesters and was taken into custody in February. More than 50,000 people were taken into custody during the demonstrations, according to the US-based Human Rights News Agency (HRANA). The NCRI estimates that more than 300 people were executed in the first month of this year.
Trump's appeal referenced upcoming negotiations with Iranian leaders, positioning the women's release as a positive step. Iran's judiciary responded by noting prior releases without specifying names. The cases highlight ongoing human rights concerns in Iran, with rights groups tracking detentions and executions tied to the protests.
Naraghi and Hosseininejad's releases on bail occurred before Trump's public statement, but the fates of the others remain under scrutiny.
