Trump Backs Ukraine Communiqué at G7 Summit in France

President Donald Trump agreed to support Ukraine and backed a joint communiqué at the Group of Seven summit held in Évian-les-Bains, France, on June 16-17, 2026. He also suggested renewing American sanctions on Russia. The move marked the first joint G7 declaration on major foreign and security policy issues since he took office.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the outcome showed common language had been found. U.S. Officials released a draft Iran peace deal on June 17. France and Britain pledged to help reopen and patrol the Strait of Hormuz. Germany and Poland signed a mutual defense agreement the same day.

French President Emmanuel Macron invited President Trump to dinner at Versailles on June 17 to mark America’s 250th anniversary.

Trump said he had planned to leave in the afternoon but changed his plans. “I’m a fan of beautiful places, and I was actually planning to leave in the afternoon, but then the French president invited me. And Versailles isn’t gold leaf, Versailles is the real deal,” he said.

Trump met India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit on June 17. Macron and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took a walk together during the meetings on June 16. Britain, France, and Germany had tried to form a new European leadership group on Ukraine, but the effort collapsed after Poland said it felt sidelined.

Analysts noted that European governments are now pursuing a mixed approach of engagement and independent steps rather than seeking a lasting reset with Washington.
