President Donald Trump canceled a planned signing ceremony for a bipartisan housing bill at the Capitol on Wednesday. He stated that the event would remain off until Congress passes the SAVE America Act. “Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” Trump posted on social media.
The SAVE America Act would impose strict requirements for voters to prove citizenship and show identification at polls. It would also include a ban on mail-in ballots and provisions blocking sex reassignment surgeries on some minors and barring people born as men from women’s sports.
Trump has demanded these additions and pressed Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster to enact the measure.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Tuesday that passing the bill “is just not realistic” and that there are not enough votes to scrap the filibuster in the 53-47 Senate.
