Trump Says Ceasefire With Iran Is Over but Agrees to Resume Talks

President Trump declared on July 10 that the United States had informed Iran the ceasefire is over while agreeing to continue talks after Tehran requested them. He posted on Truth Social that the Islamic Republic of Iran had asked to resume discussions and the United States had agreed, but stated in no uncertain terms that the Cease Fire is OVER. Iran struck U.S.

Military sites in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, and Qatar on July 9, injuring one person in Kuwait. No attacks occurred on July 10. Unclaimed airstrikes hit sites in Iran's Bushehr and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces the same day.

A Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran on July 10 in coordination with the United States to meet Iranian officials and prepare conditions for resumed negotiations, according to a diplomat with knowledge of the visit. Both sides want to return to the memorandum of understanding, with talks expected next week, possibly in Switzerland. The first ceasefire began on April 7.

The 90-day War Powers Act window passed in late May. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in congressional testimony that the War Powers clock was effectively paused during the ceasefire. Both the House and Senate have voted narrowly to end the war.

The Senate later reversed itself after rebuking Trump last month. Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy set aside his major concerns after a White House briefing. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul cited how hostilities seem to be over and the president asked me to give consideration to his negotiating position when voting to give Trump room to operate.

Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. On July 8 Trump had announced that ceasefire negotiations were over following the latest attacks.
