President Trump said Wednesday he is delaying the Senate confirmation hearing for Jay Clayton to be director of national intelligence. The move is intended to pressure Congress to pass a voter ID bill that currently lacks sufficient support for approval.
Trump announced the decision in a Truth Social post that also canceled the Senate Intelligence Committee hearing scheduled for later that day. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Bill Pulte will continue serving as acting director of national intelligence during the delay.
U.S. Bill Pulte holds dual roles as acting intelligence director and director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Outgoing Director Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation last month.
The delay coincides with efforts to reauthorize expired surveillance authorities under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Democrats have said they will not support renewal of those authorities while Pulte holds the acting position. U.S. Attorney.
