U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to arrive Tuesday in Turkey for a NATO summit that opens with a meeting with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. He will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Wednesday and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa during the visit, the White House said.
Trump will also hold a news conference while in Turkey. A senior U.S. official said the session with Zelenskiy will focus on how to end the war in Ukraine. The official stated that the battlefield has clearly frozen over the last couple of months and neither side is making a lot of progress.
The president feels a real sense of urgency to try to bring this to a stop, the official added. Trump will urge NATO allies to increase their defense spending during the summit. Defense-related deals worth billions of dollars will be announced, the official said.
On Saturday, July 4, Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin for 90 minutes and offered to help find a solution to the Ukraine war, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said. Zelenskiy last month called for a one-on-one meeting with Putin, but the Kremlin leader refused. Russia has said any solution must include Moscow assuming full control over Ukraine's Donbas region.
Ukraine rejects that assertion.
