Trump Meets Advisers to Decide on Iran Ceasefire Extension
President Trump said he is holding a Situation Room meeting to make a final decision on a possible deal with Iran. The proposed agreement would extend the ceasefire by 60 days and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
BBC NewsPresident Trump said Friday he is meeting advisers in the White House Situation Room to reach a final determination on a possible deal with Iran. The proposed agreement would extend the current ceasefire by 60 days and reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic.
In a Truth Social post, Trump listed several conditions Iran must meet. These include never possessing a nuclear weapon, keeping the strait open in both directions without tolls, and removing remaining mines. Trump also stated the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports would be lifted and that the U.S. would unearth and destroy Iran’s buried enriched uranium.
“No money will be exchanged until further notice,” Trump wrote.
Iran’s foreign ministry said on Friday there is still “no final agreement” on a deal. Iran’s top negotiator stated that Tehran would judge any agreement by actions rather than promises. “No action will be taken before the other side acts,” the negotiator said. Iranian state media outlet Fars reported the agreement was in its final stages of ratification but that no final decision had been made.
House sources told Al Jazeera on Thursday that the U.S. and Iran had reached a tentative agreement to extend the ceasefire. Uncertainty over the details of a memorandum of understanding has grown amid ongoing distrust between the two sides. The three-month war has left deep mistrust, and past instances where the Trump administration indicated a deal had been reached later proved otherwise.
““If this was in fact a deal, it would be the entire wishlist of what the US was demanding and none of the concessions that Iranian were asking for.””
