Trump Nominates Medicare Director Chris Klomp as Deputy HHS Secretary

President Donald Trump nominated Chris Klomp to serve as deputy secretary of Health and Human Services, the Washington Examiner reported. Klomp, 45, currently directs Medicare at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and acts as a special adviser to HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Klomp negotiated the administration’s “most favored nation” drug price agreements with pharmaceutical companies, including a deal with EMD Serono that covers fertility drugs used in IVF cycles. Senior administration officials stated that prices for drugs in one IVF cycle could fall from $3,400 to as low as $1,200 depending on income.

The Trump administration disseminated a finalized rule allowing employers to offer fertility benefits voluntarily as an optional product beginning in 2027.

Multiple sources confirmed to the Washington Examiner that Klomp did not participate in developing that rule. Before entering government, Klomp served three years on the board of Maven Clinic, an online fertility care company focused on IVF and surrogacy. He divested his interests in the company after taking office at CMS in 2025.

Klomp previously led Collective Medical, an electronic health records firm acquired in 2020 for a reported $650 million. Patrick T. Brown, head of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, said he could see having “a fruitful working relationship” with Klomp if confirmed.

Brown added that it will be essential for Klomp to hear pro-life concerns about actions that could cheapen how the federal government treats unborn human life. Klomp graduated from Brigham Young University in 2004 with a degree in economics and later earned an advanced business degree from Stanford University.
