A senior Trump administration official and key adviser publicly criticized OpenAI head of strategic futures Dean Ball's views on regulation, Axios reported. Outside White House AI adviser David Sacks questioned whether Ball was advocating for regulatory capture that would benefit OpenAI. Defense Under Secretary Emil Michael posted on X on Sunday calling Ball the supreme village idiot for AI.
Michael argued against Ball's claim that government agencies including the Pentagon have blocked employees from using Chinese AI. Ball posted on X over the weekend clarifying he was not proposing ill-justified soft-law discouragement of Chinese AI. He previously served as a White House architect of the Trump administration's AI Action Plan.
The Pentagon previously deemed Anthropic a national security risk, leading Anthropic to sue the government after a public fight earlier in 2026. Ball, the Pentagon, and OpenAI did not respond to Axios' request for comment made Sunday evening.
