Trump Says Iran Response to U.S. Peace Proposal Is Unacceptable
President Trump on Sunday called Iran's counterproposal to a U.S. plan to extend a fragile ceasefire "totally unacceptable." Iran has offered to transfer part of its highly enriched uranium stockpile to a third country and dilute the rest but rejected dismantling nuclear facilities or surrendering the material outright.
Al JazeeraPresident Donald Trump rejected Iran's latest response to a U.S. proposal aimed at ending the 10-week conflict, describing it as "totally unacceptable" in a social media post on Sunday. Iran submitted its counterproposal after receiving a one-page U.S. memorandum of understanding that would extend the current ceasefire by 30 days and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian response included willingness to transfer part of its highly enriched uranium stockpile to a third country, presumed to be Russia, and dilute the remainder, while refusing to dismantle any nuclear facilities. Iran also demanded that discussions on nuclear enrichment occur only after a lasting cessation of hostilities and sought guarantees that any transferred uranium would be returned if talks fail.
The U.S. side has insisted that talks on enrichment must precede any final ceasefire agreement. The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran's counterproposal also listed additional demands including full war reparations, Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, lifting of all sanctions and release of frozen assets.
The ceasefire has remained in place despite reported tests including a drone attack on Kuwait that prompted a military response with no immediate casualties reported. A cargo ship also caught fire after being hit off Qatar as the fragile truce entered its second month.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told CBS's "60 Minutes" that the war with Iran is "not over" and said President Trump wants to "physically" remove Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium. " Trump has separately threatened that Iran "will be laughing no longer" at the United States.
Senior American officials said Trump will place the Iran issue at the center of those discussions. A betting market on Polymarket currently gives a 45 percent chance that Iran agrees to surrender its enriched uranium stockpile by December 31. Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil company, reported higher first-quarter 2026 profits despite the regional conflict, citing a shift in exports to its East-West Pipeline.
“I dont like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!”
The conflict has spiked oil and gas prices in the U.S. and worldwide. Trade through the Strait of Hormuz, which carries one-fifth of global oil and gas, has largely halted under a U.S. Navy blockade. Iran has threatened a "decisive and immediate response" to any British or French warships approaching the strait as part of multinational efforts to reopen it.
The British destroyer HMS Dragon is steaming toward the area on a defensive mission. Negotiations remain centered on the timing of nuclear talks and the fate of Iran's uranium stockpile, with both sides maintaining public positions that appear far apart.
