Turkish authorities ordered police to evict the leadership of the main opposition Republican People's Party from its headquarters in Ankara on Sunday. The Ankara governor's office issued the directive after a Turkish appeals court annulled the results of a 2023 party congress that elected Ozgur Ozel as leader. The same ruling reinstated former chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
Riot police and crowds gathered outside the building as the order was carried out. Ozel has described the decision as a judicial coup and stated he will remain in the headquarters while pursuing legal appeals. Ozel called on Saturday for a new party congress to be held as soon as possible.
Kilicdaroglu said a congress would be held at an appropriate time. CHP lawmakers elected Ozel as leader of the party's parliamentary group on Saturday.
