Typhoon Bavi was located over the sea east of the northern Philippines on Thursday afternoon and moved west-northwest at 20 kph with a central pressure of 925 hectopascals and maximum sustained winds of 180 kph, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The storm is forecast to approach and pass over the Sakishima islands in Okinawa Prefecture between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Japan Airlines canceled 48 domestic flights and two international flights for Friday, affecting about 7,610 passengers, mainly on routes to and from Naha, Ishigaki and Miyako airports.
All Nippon Airways canceled all flights to and from Miyako Airport and Painushima Ishigaki Airport on Friday, plus all flights to and from Miyako Airport on Saturday. Ferry operations linking Okinawa Prefecture with Kagoshima Prefecture and those connecting Okinawa's remote islands were canceled for Friday and Saturday.
The typhoon is expected to make landfall in China on Sunday and weaken into a tropical depression by Monday morning, Japan Times reported.
