The Army chose Caterpillar, Forterra, IDV USA and Overland AI to develop unmanned systems that can breach obstacles and minefields. Awards are expected in coming weeks and will lead to tests ending early next year.
Breaking DefenseThe U.S. Army selected Caterpillar, Forterra, IDV USA and Overland AI to develop unmanned ground vehicles under its Engineer Autonomous Breaching Capability program, Breaking Defense reported. The announcement came Wednesday.
The program seeks systems that can rapidly clear obstacles and minefields while minimizing risk to soldiers and allowing follow-on forces to advance safely. Selected contractors will supply robotic platforms with beyond-line-of-sight autonomous control. Awards of undisclosed value are expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.
Once contracts are signed, the vendors will conduct a series of demonstrations and tests that conclude with a Transformation in Contact unit assessment early next year. An image released by the Army showed unmanned ground vehicles during a Joint Readiness Training Center rotation at Fort Polk, Louisiana, on April 20.
The service did not respond to questions about whether it plans to narrow the field of vendors later.
