U.S. Conducts Strikes on Iranian Targets Near Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. carried out another round of strikes Sunday against Iranian military targets around the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps missile sites, air defenses, fast attack craft, coastal surveillance systems, and drone infrastructure.

The strikes followed continued attacks on commercial shipping. Officials said the operation aimed to degrade Iran's ability to threaten maritime traffic and preserve freedom of navigation through the waterway. Iran expanded its response beyond the Strait.

It launched missiles and drones toward Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman, broadening the confrontation to include several Gulf states that host U.S. forces or have supported efforts to keep maritime traffic flowing. Iran maintains that it has the right to regulate traffic through the waterway.

It has declared the Strait closed and argues vessels using routes not authorized by Tehran are operating unlawfully. Iran views control of the Strait as key leverage in broader negotiations with Washington.
