The U.S. death toll from the conflict with Iran reached 17 after three service members died in recent incidents tied to Iranian attacks, The Japan Times reported. An Iranian strike in Jordan killed two U.S.
Service members and injured others on Friday. U.S. Central Command announced Sunday that a third service member died Saturday during a controlled detonation of an unexploded Iranian drone in northern Iraq.
The U.S. is examining unidentified remains of another victim from the Jordan strike. Both sides traded attacks over the weekend after the Jordan incident. President Donald Trump acknowledged the troop fatalities only in a brief conversation with a media outlet and has given little public sign of his strategy.
Both Iran and the U.S. have largely abandoned the tentative peace deal previously touted by Trump. The week of escalating missile and drone strikes highlighted the risk that the conflict will reignite in full, The Japan Times reported.
