U.S. delivers first KC-46 refueling aircraft to Israel
The first of at least six KC-46 tanker aircraft arrived in Israel on May 27, 2026. Officials said the plane increases refueling capacity for long-range missions.
Officials said the delivery marks the start of a transfer of at least six and possibly eight such planes. The KC-46 can carry up to 15 percent more fuel and refuel twice as many aircraft per flight as the previous model. A lieutenant colonel stated that the aircraft would have increased refueling capacity during recent operations and now allows greater range across the region.
Delivery timeline and modifications The Defense Ministry announced on May 4, 2026, that the aircraft had completed a test flight in the U.S. and would arrive within about a month. Officials said the plane, designated "Gideon," will receive Israeli systems before entering service.
Additional deliveries are scheduled for next month, with two more expected in 2027, two by 2030, and possibly two more after 2030. The aircraft will be adapted to meet operational requirements for extended range and air superiority.
Technical capabilities The KC-46 can transport about 110 troops or support 22 medical evacuation scenarios. It features a kitchen, oven, bathroom, and improved temperature controls. A U.S. pilot previously described the plane as capable of carrying 207,000 pounds of fuel and refueling up to a dozen aircraft per sortie.
The aircraft can fly 16 hours unrefueled and up to 24 hours with aerial refueling.
