The United States is demanding that Iran issue a public statement on Saturday confirming that the Strait of Hormuz is open and that it will not fire on commercial vessels, according to three senior U.S. officials. The officials said Iran approached Washington through regional mediators after recent maritime incidents and told U.S. interlocutors it wanted to continue talks.
One official stated that an internal power struggle in Tehran is affecting negotiations and that Iran must demonstrate control before any agreement can be reached.
Sanctions and casualties The United States imposed sanctions on Iranian financier Ali Ansari, who officials said manages assets linked to the Supreme Leader and members of the IRGC. The sanctions aim to freeze assets and deter third-country dealings with the targeted individuals.
Iran’s Health Ministry reported that U.S. strikes on Tuesday and Wednesday killed 17 people and injured 115 others across six cities.
Regional developments An Israeli drone strike in the southern Lebanese town of Kafr Rumman killed one motorcyclist and seriously injured a second person traveling by car, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency. Iran’s envoy to the United Nations accused the United States of unlawful acts and called for accountability.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on social media that a recent U.S. trade document easing export controls for the United Arab Emirates was issued in exchange for support of military action against Iran.
