U.S. Draws 2-2 With Germany in World Cup Tuneup
The United States men's national team tied Germany 2-2 in its final match before the World Cup opener. Antonee Robinson scored the equalizer and led the team in defensive actions.
Germany took the lead in the 57th minute after a sequence of passes left a player unmarked at the top of the box. The U.S. equalized when Antonee Robinson scored from outside the box.
Robinson led the team with 12 defensive interventions and six ball recoveries in 63 minutes. He also created three chances and scored the only U.S. goal. Midfielder Tyler Adams said after the match that Robinson was "unreal" and joked that he should save the goal for the World Cup.
The U.S. has now allowed opponents to finish above expected goals in four straight matches. On the first German goal, a foul set up a free kick and a marking lapse left an attacker unmarked in the box. The second German goal came from a passing sequence that caught the defense a step slow.
The U.S. created most of its chances after the early deficit. Christian Pulisic led the team with 18 ground duels and 217 meters of progressive carry distance. Substitutes tested the German goalkeeper late, including wingback Max Arfsten who recorded four progressive carries in 18 minutes.
“I think it was an even game. If you see the stats, some of the stats [were] for us. I am so happy with the commitment and ... how the reaction was [after the early goal].”
Pochettino said the result reflected the team's culture and values rather than tactics alone. The U.S. has played four consecutive matches against top-15 FIFA-ranked teams, winning one and losing three. It finished with 5.6 expected goals compared with Germany's 6.2.
