U.S. and Iranian negotiators opened a round of technical talks on June 21, 2026, at the Buergenstock Resort near Lucerne, Switzerland. The session follows a memorandum of understanding that established a 14-point framework for peace and gave both sides 60 days to produce a detailed agreement.
Officials said the meeting marks the first time the two sides sit together as teams to identify core issues and settle differences.
The stated U.S. goal is to secure ironclad Iranian commitments to abandon nuclear weapons ambitions and to stop driving regional instability. In return, the United States is prepared to transform its relationship with Iran if Tehran meets the stated conditions.
Officials added that the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the end of Iran’s nuclear program have already been accomplished, leaving the question of how much more the two sides can achieve together.
The U.S. side is joined by special envoys.
Iran is represented by its parliamentary speaker and foreign minister. The talks are mediated by Pakistan and Qatar.
The round had been delayed by clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. The memorandum of understanding now sets the schedule for further sessions over the next 60 days. Officials described the current Iranian leadership as less radicalized than previous groups and said the negotiations offer the Middle East a chance to turn over a new leaf or return to the old way.
