The United States struck a nuclear power plant under construction in Iran's southwestern Khuzestan province. U.S. forces fired multiple missiles at the facility, Iran's UN ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani told the Security Council in a letter cited by Iran's Mehr news agency, OilPrice.com reported.
The facility, known as the Karun power plant or Darkhovin, is covered by International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards. All activities at the site are exclusively peaceful, fully transparent and in complete conformity with the nuclear deal Iran agreed with Western powers, Iravani stated in the letter. The strikes formed part of the 18th wave of U.S.
Missile strikes against Iranian targets. Construction on the Darkhovin plant began in December 2022. The facility is designed for a nameplate capacity of 300 MW upon completion. The International Atomic Energy Agency stated the attack did not risk a nuclear fuel release.
The plant was in early construction stages and contained no fuel at the time of the last inspection, the agency said.
