U.S. Team Wins Two Straight World Cup Games for First Time in 96 Years

The U.S. men's national soccer team recorded consecutive World Cup wins for the first time since 1930 after defeating Australia 2-0 on June 19. The result followed an earlier victory over Paraguay and secured first place in Group D with one match left.

The coach selected 14 players with five or fewer senior caps for last summer's Gold Cup. Three of those players started in the opening World Cup matches, including the goalkeeper and a defender who scored against Australia.

The team adapted after losing one player to injury and shifted to a two-striker formation not previously used in the tournament. The coach placed one midfielder deeper in a defensive partnership and positioned another player on the wing with a third center back behind.

Captain Tim Ream said the team built confidence through training sessions and matches rather than any single moment. The coach said the focus remains on the collective rather than individual names.
