U.S. Tells Oman It Opposes Strait of Hormuz Tolling System
The United States warned Oman on Thursday not to facilitate any tolling arrangement in the Strait of Hormuz. Officials said any partners involved would face penalties.
Le MondeThe United States warned Oman on Thursday not to participate in any effort to impose tolls on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent posted on X that Washington would not tolerate such a system and would penalize any partners involved.
Background on the Warning The statement followed remarks by the president the previous day that the strait must remain open to all traffic as international waters. Officials expressed concern over reported talks between Oman and Iran regarding future control of the waterway.
"The United States Government will not tolerate any effort to impose a tolling system in the Strait of Hormuz," Bessent wrote. "Oman, in particular, should know that the U.S. Treasury will aggressively target any actors involved — directly or indirectly — in facilitating tolls for the Strait and any willing partners will be penalized," he added.
