Uganda Reports No New Ebola Cases for 11 Days but Faces Low Testing Supplies as Congo Nears 800 Cases
Uganda’s director of public health says testing supplies are running low while officials express optimism that a recent surge has been contained.
techcentral.co.zaUganda has recorded no new Ebola cases in the past 11 days, according to @CBSNews reported. The country’s director of public health, Dr. Daniel Kyabayinze, said the situation remains “a war” and that supplies need to be replenished.
Dr. Kyabayinze told CBS News foreign correspondent @ramyinocencio that supplies of testing reagents needed to identify the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola are running particularly low. He said the chemical compounds used for diagnosis must be restocked to maintain surveillance.
Uganda’s top health officials stated they are optimistic the country has stopped a recent surge. The same officials noted that the absence of new cases over the past 11 days supports that assessment. Across the border in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, confirmed Ebola cases have reached nearly 800, @CBSNews reported.
The increase in the neighboring country has drawn attention from Ugandan health authorities monitoring cross-border risks.
