GB News reported that the UK has around 12,000 ANPR cameras scanning over 100 million plates daily. More councils are using the system for traffic enforcement while the Department for Transport considers penalty points and vehicle seizures for untaxed cars.
680news.comGB News reported that the UK now operates around 12,000 Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras that scan more than 100 million number plates each day. The cameras automatically verify whether vehicles carry valid insurance, road tax and MOT certificates. More councils have started deploying the technology to enforce traffic rules.
In Gloucestershire, new ANPR units monitor illegal turns, bus lane violations and stops in yellow box junctions. Online searches for ANPR camera locations rose 39 per cent over the past year. Searches for monthly road tax payment options increased 1,614 per cent in the same period.
The Department for Transport is considering tougher measures under the new Road Safety Strategy. Motorists caught driving an untaxed vehicle could face penalty points on their licence in addition to a fine, and authorities could receive stronger powers to seize such vehicles. Drivers currently receive an £80 fixed penalty for using an untaxed vehicle.
Court fines can reach £1,000 or five times the unpaid tax, whichever is higher. Analysis by Vertu of Ministry of Justice data showed outstanding motoring court cases have risen 29 per cent since 2016. The average time to complete these cases has more than doubled, leaving many drivers waiting around three months longer than a decade ago.
Zack Rahman, General Manager of Vertu BYD Hartlepool, said drivers should keep documents current because the number of ANPR cameras continues to grow. "Car admin is easier than it has ever been. Whether it's paying your car tax online or adding a simple calendar reminder a month before your MOT is due, it only takes a couple of minutes and can save you a lot of stress," he said.
Rahman also advised checking number plates at night with a torch from about 20 metres away to confirm they remain reflective and legible to the cameras.
