UK Conservatives Lose Hundreds of Seats in Local and Regional Elections
The Conservatives lost more than 500 seats in England and control of six councils while finishing fifth in Wales with 22 losses. Projections show the party could place fifth in Scotland with 13 or 14 seats. The party's projected national vote share rose to 17 percent from 15 percent last year and it gained control of Westminster council from Labour.
foxbusiness.comThe Conservatives suffered heavy losses in elections held across the UK, with both Reform and the Liberal Democrats gaining votes from the party. In England the Conservatives lost more than 500 seats and control of six councils. In Wales the party lost 22 Senedd seats and finished in fifth place.
With counting continuing in Scotland the BBC is projecting the Conservatives could finish fifth with 13 or 14 seats. The party's projected national share of the vote increased to 17 percent from 15 percent at this time last year. The party also gained control of Westminster council from Labour.
A party spokesperson said there were grounds for optimism and that good strategy takes time. The party retained control of councils including Harlow, Broxbourne, Bexley and Fareham. Officials pointed to these results as positive signs amid the losses.
Despite the scale of the losses there has been no public speculation about the leadership. This stance aligns with observations from recent weeks that the leader's position would remain secure regardless of the election outcome. The party highlighted its performance in Parliament as one reason for stability.
Officials noted effective use of parliamentary procedures such as requiring the government to release documents related to an appointment as ambassador to the US. MPs have viewed the leader's recent performances at Prime Minister's Questions positively.
A second factor is the absence of immediate internal alternatives following recent political shifts.
It will be difficult for the party to present the results as anything other than a significant disappointment. The projected national vote share increase and specific council gains provide some counterbalance to the seat losses. Further counting in Scotland is expected to clarify the final seat totals there.
