Petrol and diesel prices in the UK have risen sharply due to the ongoing war in Iran, with average costs at 156.98p per litre for petrol and 188.53p per litre for diesel. Petrol stations across the UK must now update their prices within 30 minutes of any change, following new enforcement powers introduced by the Competition and Markets Authority on May 1, 2026. This measure supports the government's Fuel Finder tool, which launched in February 2026 and helps drivers locate the cheapest fuel in their local areas.

Experts have urged UK drivers to use the tool since its introduction, amid soaring petrol and diesel prices driven by the war in Iran.

The ongoing war in Iran is driving up energy prices and surging energy costs, reshaping the global economy from energy markets to everyday prices, according to an NPR report published on May 1, 2026, at 5:18 PM ET. Recession fears are growing due to the Iran war fallout.

In China, the war is weakening the economy through declining consumer spending, falling car sales and production, and struggles in key export sectors, despite earlier signs of resilience, as detailed by the Hoover Institution.

Lee Puffett, managing director of Start Rescue, stated that all motorists were feeling the pinch of higher petrol and diesel prices. Rule 97 of the Highway Code states that drivers must have sufficient fuel or charge for their journey, especially on motorways.

Running out of fuel on the motorway leads to a £100 fine and three penalty points for careless driving, in addition to recovery fees, Puffett noted.
