GB News reported that mandatory Intelligent Speed Assist systems on new UK and EU cars show lower accuracy when measured at each speed-limit change. Thatcham Research found the worst vehicle fell to 74.3 percent accuracy and displayed invalid limits including 5 mph and 100 mph.
news.sky.comIntelligent Speed Assist systems required on all new cars sold in the UK and EU since July 2024 recorded lower accuracy rates when tested at each speed-limit change rather than over total distance, GB News reported. Thatcham Research applied an event-based method that checked readings whenever limits changed.
The worst-performing vehicle scored 91.3 percent under the official distance-based test but dropped to 74.3 percent under the event-based method.
The best-performing vehicle fell from 98.39 percent to 90.3 percent. Systems in tested vehicles displayed speed limits of 5 mph, 10 mph, 15 mph and 100 mph on UK roads, none of which are legally recognised limits on public roads. Yousif Al-Ani, Principal ADAS Engineer at Thatcham Research, said systems should be aligned with defined speed-limit parameters for each market and that readings outside those limits should be filtered.
Jonathan Hewett, Chief Executive of Thatcham Research, said ADAS technologies offer a significant opportunity to improve road safety only if the systems work correctly and earn driver confidence. He added that a system that misreads limits or presents unrelated speed data frustrates drivers and leads them to turn it off.
Thatcham Research called on regulators and manufacturers to adopt event-based assessments and to improve camera recognition, GPS mapping and sensor technology.
