Some models project temperatures climbing into the mid-30s Celsius in England and Wales next week. The Met Office has characterized the outlook as warmer than average while noting remaining uncertainty about how high readings may go.
Weather's data supplier released a summer outlook on 1 June that indicated an increased chance of heatwaves and heat-related impacts. High pressure is forecast to move in from the south-west across western Europe and into England and Wales by the end of this week. Temperatures could then rise into the mid to high 20s across the Midlands, eastern and south-east England.
National temperature records were set in at least eight European countries during the past week. The Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Denmark each recorded their hottest days on record. More than 1,300 excess deaths since 21 June have been linked to the heatwave, according to the World Health Organization.
Around 1,000 of those deaths occurred in France. Red extreme heat warnings remain in force across Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Serbia and Croatia, where temperatures are expected to reach the high 30s Celsius. Temperatures across eastern Europe are forecast to be 8 to 12 degrees Celsius above average for the end of June.
