Russian air defenses intercepted 72 drones during the overnight attack, according to St. Petersburg officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Telegram that the strikes targeted port oil infrastructure that funds Russia's war effort and also hit Kronstadt, a naval base more than 850 km from Ukraine's border.
The oil terminal is described by Ukraine's military as one of Russia's largest, with capacity to produce 12.5 million tonnes of petroleum products per year. A video released by Zelensky showed a drone approaching the site and black smoke rising afterward. Russia has not issued a public statement on the Kronstadt claim.
Russian officials warned residents to remain indoors and noted possible mobile internet disruptions following the attack. The strikes come two days after a Russian aerial attack on Kyiv that killed at least 30 people and forced 50,000 residents into shelters.
Ukraine's military separately denied Russian claims that the eastern town of Kostyantynivka had fallen under full Russian control, stating that only small infiltration groups were present and being destroyed.
