Ukrainian Drones Strike Russian Oil Port and Tankers
Ukrainian forces conducted drone strikes on Russia's Primorsk oil port and shadow fleet tankers in the Baltic and Black Seas on Sunday. Oil prices declined while S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures rose modestly. Investor Jim Chanos noted that AI-related capital spending could boost S&P 500 earnings estimates for 2026-2027.
France 24Ukrainian drones struck Russia's Primorsk oil port and several vessels in the Baltic Sea on Sunday, part of a broader wave of attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. The strikes targeted a key loading port operated by Russia's state oil firm Transneft, capable of handling hundreds of thousands of barrels per day.
Primorsk, Russia's largest oil exporting port on the Baltic Sea, lies over 620 miles from Ukraine, between the Russian-Finnish border and St.
Petersburg. Local Gov. Alexander Drozdenko reported that a nighttime drone strike sparked a blaze at the port but did not cause an oil spill. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the strikes destroyed several military and other targets, inflicting significant damage on oil port infrastructure.
'One more Russian carrier of Kalibr missiles is out of action,' Zelenskyy wrote in a Telegram post on Sunday. He added that Ukrainian drones hit a Karakurt missile ship, a patrol boat, and a tanker belonging to Russia's shadow oil fleet, used to evade Western sanctions and price caps on Russian energy.
Zelenskyy also said Ukrainian forces struck two more shadow fleet tankers near the entrance of the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, noting that 'these tankers were actively used to transport oil.
The operation was led by the chief of Ukraine's general staff, Andrii Hnatov. Major General Yevhen Khmara reported the successful destruction of targets in the Primorsk port on Sunday. Zelenskyy said the strikes limit Russia's war potential.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that global oil prices may rise further if Ukraine continues to hit Russian oil infrastructure. Ukrainian officials argue that oil revenue directly funds Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, now in its fifth year.
The attacks included tankers in Russia's shadow fleet, which Ukraine alleged were used to illegally transport Russian crude oil in violation of sanctions.
Primorsk and another main port in the Baltic Sea account for around 40% of Russia's oil exports. Primorsk was targeted multiple times in March. Ukrainian drones have been striking Russian oil tankers increasingly often in recent weeks, as Ukraine seeks to diminish Russia's ability to export oil and offset Russia's financial gains since the war in Iran raised oil prices.
Kyiv has recently stepped up its attacks on Russia's oil export infrastructure. In related developments, two people were killed and three others wounded as Russian drones struck Ukraine's southern Odesa region overnight into Sunday, May 3, 2026, according to Ukraine's Emergency Service.
The attack damaged three residential buildings and hit port infrastructure, causing a fire that was later extinguished by emergency teams.
Nighttime Russian strikes wounded six people in the Dnipropetrovsk region in central Ukraine, the agency said. A passenger bus transporting 40 children was damaged in Dnipropetrovsk region, but no one inside was injured. In Russia, a Ukrainian drone strike west of Moscow killed a 77-year-old man near the town of Volokolamsk on Sunday, local Gov.
Andrei Vorobyov reported. Volokolamsk is some 75 miles from central Moscow. Vorobyov added that six drones were shot down in the Moscow region, which surrounds but does not include the Russian capital.
At least five more drones were downed on the approach to Moscow itself, according to mayor Sergei Sobyanin. Separately, a man, woman, and child were injured after Ukrainian drone debris flew into an apartment block in Russia's western Smolensk region on Sunday, according to local Gov. Vasiliy Anokhin.
Russia's Defense Ministry reported that a total of 334 Ukrainian UAVs were downed overnight over Russia and occupied Crimea on Sunday. The Ukrainian Air Force stated that Russia attacked Ukraine with 269 drones and ballistic missiles overnight into Sunday. Ukrainian forces shot down and repelled 249 drones, while hits from ballistic missiles and 19 drones were recorded in 15 locations.
Amid these events, oil prices extended their decline on Sunday, according to market data. Oil prices fell on Sunday, as reported by The New York Times. 2% on Sunday, via @FirstSquawk.
3% on Sunday, also via @FirstSquawk. Futures on the S&P 500 rose slightly on Sunday, per The New York Times. Separately, investor Jim Chanos stated that massive increases in AI-related capex estimates will pull up S&P 500 EPS estimates for 2026-27 due to accounting mismatch for revenues/profits (immediate recognition) and costs (mostly capitalized), creating profits 'magic' of capital spending booms.
Chanos made the statement on May 2, 2026, via Benzinga. A surge in capital expenditure related to artificial intelligence could enhance earnings per share estimates for the S&P 500 in 2026-27, according to Chanos. Accounting practices for AI investments create a disparity between immediate revenue and profit recognition and the capitalization of costs, Chanos said.
