Dozens of Ultra-Orthodox demonstrators arrived at the Tunnel Checkpoint on Sunday and blocked traffic routes while interfering with normal operations. Border Police officers from the Jerusalem periphery unit and Jerusalem District police officers responded to the scene.
Background to the protest The demonstration followed mass arrests at a separate protest outside the home of Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg on Wednesday night. Demonstrators at that event damaged property and attempted to enter the residence. Police detained dozens of individuals for disorderly conduct after arriving at the Wednesday incident.
Draft policy context Anti-draft protests have increased in recent weeks after the legal framework allowing thousands of eligible Ultra-Orthodox men to avoid military service expired in June 2023. The High Court of Justice has directed the government to create a new enforcement policy.
Justice Noam Sohlberg authored a November 2025 ruling requiring the state to develop measures against draft evasion, including criminal penalties and economic sanctions. The ruling has prompted additional legal challenges over benefits tied to education and daycare.
