The UN recorded 945 deaths and 4,325 injuries from landmines and explosive remnants of war in 2024, citing the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor. At least 58 states and territories are contaminated by anti-personnel mines, with the highest civilian casualties reported in Myanmar, Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine.
Casualty breakdown Civilians accounted for approximately 90 percent of recorded casualties where military or civilian status was known. Myanmar recorded 2,029 casualties, Syria 1,015, Afghanistan 624, and Ukraine, Nigeria, Mali, Yemen and Burkina Faso each recorded more than 200.
Treaty status and funding The Ottawa mine ban convention has 162 states parties.
Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland recently withdrew, and Ukraine is suspending its implementation. Contributions to the UN Voluntary Trust Fund for Assistance in Mine Action fell from $125 million to $46 million over the seven years to 2025. Lebanon recently joined the Ottawa convention.
