UN Forum Adopts Plan to Protect 30 Percent of Land and Oceans by 2030

Nearly 200 countries agreed this week to protect 30 percent of the world's land and oceans by 2030. The commitment was reached at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, which concluded on 15 July 2026 in New York.

The forum adopted the target as part of renewed efforts to advance the Sustainable Development Goals. Officials said the measure aims to conserve terrestrial ecosystems and maintain marine biodiversity. The agreement sets a measurable deadline for participating nations to expand protected areas on land and at sea.

Countries will now need to identify additional sites for protection and report progress through existing UN channels. No specific funding amounts or enforcement mechanisms were detailed in the forum outcome. The next review of national commitments is scheduled for the 2027 session of the forum.
