Unesco's draft decision maintains the reef's World Heritage status. The report notes ongoing pressures from coral bleaching and climate change while acknowledging Australian efforts on water quality and fisheries.
South China Morning PostUnesco released a draft report on Friday that keeps Australia's Great Barrier Reef off the list of World Heritage sites considered in danger. The 2,300-kilometre reef along Queensland's coast will retain its existing status. Canberra welcomed the decision on Saturday.
Unesco has reviewed the reef each year since 2021.
The agency cited mass coral bleaching, above-average water temperatures, land-based run-off, coastal development, and predation by Crown of Thorns starfish. Hard coral cover declined substantially in 2024-2025, marking the sixth bleaching event since 2016.
The draft report states that Australia is addressing concerns over climate change, water quality, sustainable fisheries management, and land clearing. "Whilst the resilience of the reef remains evident, its capacity to tolerate and recover from such events is increasingly compromised, and this is of utmost concern," Unesco said.
