United Airlines Flight 169 struck a light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike adjacent to the runway while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on May 3, 2026. The Boeing 767 was arriving from Venice, Italy, carrying more than 200 passengers and 11 crew members. The National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary report on the incident on Thursday.
The report states the first officer warned the captain that the aircraft was “a little low” on approach. The captain was 19 feet above the center of the New Jersey Turnpike moments before touchdown. ” The captain later told investigators, “I thought we were low,” but said he was unable to process the data in time to call for another approach.
The plane hit the light pole seconds before touchdown. It landed normally afterward and no one on board was injured. Initial reports said the aircraft struck a passing tractor-trailer and injured the driver.
The NTSB report states the plane did not hit the truck. Debris from the light pole struck the vehicle instead, and investigators found no tire marks on the tractor-trailer. ” “We have really well-trained pilots,” he said.
