An unmarried couple in Indonesia's Aceh province each received 21 lashes of the cane on July 2 after being accused of kissing in a car and live-streaming the act on TikTok, South China Morning Post reported. The caning took place in Banda Aceh, the provincial capital. Footage of the punishment spread rapidly online.
The 22-year-old man and 25-year-old woman grimaced as each blow landed on their backs. The woman burst into tears and wailed in pain as the public punishment continued. Aceh is the only Indonesian province that enforces sharia law under its Islamic Criminal Code, known locally as Qanun Jinayat.
The code was formally enacted in 2004 as part of a peace agreement that granted the province semi-autonomous status after a long civil conflict. Aceh was historically one of the most powerful Islamic sultanates in Southeast Asia and observed informal Islamic law for centuries before the 2004 codification.
